Office 97 Migration for Developers and Network Administrators

Making the Move to Office 97

The Office 97 Developer Forum (http://www.microsoft.com/

officedev) is now featuring White papers and technical

articles for developers planning to migrate their solutions

to Office 97. The migration effort is not without issues

and these papers are an effort to ease the transition for

developers. Please refer people interested in migration

issues to this site. We will continue to update the site

with additional articles (including migrating from WordPerfect

to Word 97--Whitepaper and tools) and sample code. As of

Monday, the site contains the following:

Microsoft Outlook 97: Interoperability with Microsoft Exchange

Client, Microsoft Mail, and Microsoft Schedule+

This paper focuses on interoperability across Microsoft e-mail

and group scheduling applications, and on coexistence issues

that can affect users, administrators, and application and

forms developers.

WordBasic Migration to Visual Basic for Applications

Microsoft Word 97 now includes the Visual Basic for Applications

programming language and environment. WordBasic code is

automatically migrated to Visual Basic when the file is opened.

This white paper explains the conversion process, many of the

known conversion issues and solutions to resolve conversion

issues.

Wordbasic to VBA Conversion Table

This excerpt from the on-line help file found in Office 97

provides a quick reference guide for Microsoft Word

developers to locate the Visual Basic for Applications

equivalent of WordBasic commands.

Migrating to Microsoft Access 97 Q&A

This question and answer guide introduces some of the new

features of Access 97 and addresses questions on

compatibility with previous versions of Microsoft Access.

Office 97 Resource Kit

The Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit (ORK) is a technical

reference for installing, configuring, and supporting

Office 97 in the workgroup. This beta version of the ORK

provides valuable information for deploying Office 97.

* Coming Soon: (note: these papers should be available by end of week)

Migrating Solutions to Microsoft Excel 97

Microsoft Excel developers will find that Excel 97 is a major

upgrade of the product, with a greatly enhanced development

environment and forms package (Microsoft Forms). Great efforts

have been taken to minimize the conversion process from previous

versions of Microsoft Excel. This document provides developers

both a conversion guide and reference document for migrating

solutions to Excel 97.

Migrating Solutions to PowerPoint 97

With PowerPoint 97, developers can create forms, modules, classes,

and CommandBars to completely automate presentation construction

and slideshows. This whitepaper is to identify changes in the

PowerPoint 97 object model that may affect custom automation

solutions created for use with PowerPoint 95.

Replacing API Calls that Manipulate Menus

Developers who previously relied on API calls to control and

modify menus can now take advantage of Microsoft Office Menus

and Toolbars. This article from Ken Getz provides pointers and

examples for developers moving from API calls to using the

CommandBar object model.

NOTE: we will be featuring guest articles from high profile

developers currently involved in migrating solutions (such as

the one from Ken Getz above) to provide useful tips and guides

from developers planning to migrate their code.
