Relative Merits of S-HTTP, SMosaic/Shttpd
Strengths:
-
-
- The first serious implementation of public-key-crypto-aware Mosaic
- Rather flexible (allows for Kerberos key exchange and other mechanisms)
- Reasonable HTML extensions
Weaknesses:
-
-
- Somewhat geared toward RSA suite (not terribly modular)
- HTTP extensions must be refined and standardized
- Some backward compatibility issues remain
- HTML extensions a bit hard to manage (server side)
Future:
-
-
- Secure Mosaic to be distributed (free, non-commercial user) by NCSA
- Now part of SPRY server, client and OpenMarkets' server
- S-HTTP module for Spyglass' Modular Architecture
- Will be supported by Netscape soon
