Relative Merits of S-HTTP, SMosaic/Shttpd

Strengths:

  • The first serious implementation of public-key-crypto-aware Mosaic

  • Rather flexible (allows for Kerberos key exchange and other mechanisms)

  • Reasonable HTML extensions

Weaknesses:

  • Somewhat geared toward RSA suite (not terribly modular)

  • HTTP extensions must be refined and standardized

  • Some backward compatibility issues remain

  • HTML extensions a bit hard to manage (server side)

Future:

  • Secure Mosaic to be distributed (free, non-commercial user) by NCSA

  • Now part of SPRY server, client and OpenMarkets' server

  • S-HTTP module for Spyglass' Modular Architecture

  • Will be supported by Netscape soon
