PGP/PEM Authentication in NCSA Mosaic/httpd

Status:

• Initial implementation in XMosaic/httpd mainly proof of concept

• Revised implementation in progress, using CCI on client side

Strengths:

• PGP/PEM are widely used (for email, news posting, etc.)

• Organizations may wish to use one package for all communications

• Key management handled external to Web browser, server

• Graceful handling of signed documents

Weaknesses:

• Calling external programs can be slow

• External key management may seem less easy to use
