* NEW FOR DEVELOPERS IN ENTERPRISE 3.0: Improved Server-side JavaScript
Several enhancements to Netscape Enterprise Server with respect to
JavaScript are of special interest to developers:

- A big enhancement is Enterprise Server's ability to support object
persistence. Object properties now persist across web page requests,
thus programming tasks become easier with less application state to track.

- Multi-threading of the JavaScript engine and the Informix, Oracle,
and Sybase database client libraries means your applications can now
run faster.

- A new database feature allows you to manage multiple database
connections so now you can design applications that access data stored
in many data sources.

- Database stored procedures can now be invoked directly from
JavaScript. For example, a compiled database query registered with an
Informix database can be executed from your JavaScript application and
the result set can be manipulated by your application.

Technical documentation on Enterprise Server 3.0 can be found at:

* NETSCAPE AND VISIGENIC DELIVER CORBA-COMPLIANT PLATFORM
Netscape has expanded its use of Visigenic's ORB technology with a
new agreement that integrates Visigenic's VisiBroker for Java and
VisiBroker for C++ in Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0. Developers
can create distributed applications with the single-user development
license for the Visigenic developer tools that are bundled with
Enterprise Server 3.0. Enterprise Server 3.0 is now in public
beta and will include the Visigenics tools in an upcoming release.

Objects created with VisiBroker conform to the Common Object
Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) 2.0 and Internet Inter-ORB
Protocol (IIOP) standards that are accessible by other CORBA
2.0/IIOP-compliant objects. By integrating the Visigenics ORB
technologies in Netscape Enterprise Server, Netscape wants to make
it easier to build multi-tiered distributed applications and
leverage the thousands of CORBA-compliant applications already
in place today.

The Netscape ONE Vision and Roadmap includes more on how
CORBA and Netscape ONE work together:

signed and encrypted e-mail and more with Certificate Server 1.0.

and 2.5, and Irix 5.3 & 6.2.

* TECH VISION THIS WEEK: THE LDAP SOLUTION
For the Internet to reach its full communication potential, it
must become easier to find people and information online. Currently,
many organizations use multiple directory technologies that are
incompatible with one another, making the management and maintenance
of user information an expensive and time-consuming problem. Marc
Andreessen talks about the need for universally accessible directories
and discusses why LDAP, (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) provides
a solution.
